The Center for Technology and School Change (CTSC), at Teachers College, Columbia University is partnering with the New York City Council and the New York City Department of Education as part of the CTSC Initiative – Meaningful Integration of Technology (NYC- InTech).

The Center for Technology and School Change (CTSC), at Teachers College, Columbia University is partnering with the New York City Council and the New York City Department of Education as part of the CTSC Initiative – Meaningful Integration of Technology (NYC- InTech).Through this collaboration, the Center is working with ten Title I New York City public schools (K-8)--an elementary school and a middle school from each borough--to develop teachers’ capacities to design and implement technology-infused, transdisciplinary learning experiences for students within the context of the STEM disciplines. The goals of the program are to:

• Position students as knowledge builders by presenting them with equitable opportunities to succeed in an authentic technology-enriched STEM environment.

• Position teachers as designers of authentic, student-centered STEM learning environments with meaningful technology integration.

• Explore how meaningful technology integration can set high expectations for students, deepen students’ understanding, and uncover students’ thinking.

• Apply 21st Century skills (i.e., critical thinking, collaboration, communication, creativity) to the design of STEM learning experiences for students.
• Expose students to different professions and careers and their contributions to social justice issues.

In working towards these goals, the Center’s professional development team, along with the technology specialist, are providing in-school support for teachers and administrators to design and implement authentic, standards-based STEM projects that apply technology as a thinking tool for deepening student learning.  The initiative also supports administrators in leading such efforts.
