Dr. Ellen Meier has presented a MOOC, Innovating Instruction: Reimagining Teaching with Technology, in partnership with edX and the White House ConnectED Initiative.  Working in collaboration with Sandra Markus, a doctoral student at Teachers College, and the Center for Teaching and Learning at Columbia University, Innovating Instruction is a 4-module professional development course aimed at K-12 educators interested in integrating technology in their classrooms using a design-based approach.

The MOOC is free on the edX website and will be live May 24th-June 28th. After June 28th, edX will archive the Innovating Instruction MOOC. Course content will continue to be available for auditing through edX without class discussions and synchronous material.

The MOOC exposes a broader audience to the CTSC’s Innovating Instruction ©  professional development model and approach to technology integration. One of Dr. Meier’s goals for the course was to develop an innovative and supportive environment for online learning through MOOCs. Unlike more traditional online courses, Innovating Instruction does not use tests or quizzes to assess learning. Instead, participants complete “attestation forms” showing they have completed core requirements in each module as well as electives based on their individual interests and prior knowledge.

Modules address design-based technology integration approaches, learning theories, personal learning networks, and innovative formative assessment strategies. Academic readings are combined with video interviews with education experts such as Renee Hobbs (Media Literacy), Jay McTighe (Understanding by Design), and Chris Dede (Technology and Equity), who weigh in on the changing world of technology integration in K-12 classrooms.
